Important Documents to Sell Your Car in Tanzania

When you want to sell your car, it's not just about agreeing on a price, making payment, and handing over the keys. In order for the sale process to be legal and safe for both parties, there are important documents that you should have. Without these documents, you could find yourself in legal trouble or unable to reach a formal agreement with the buyer.

Below is a summary of the main documents you need to legally sell your car in Tanzania:

1. Vehicle Registration Card/Logbook

This is the main document that proves the ownership of the vehicle. It must have your name on it as the legal owner. If the name belongs to someone else, you must show proof of transfer of ownership. This card is issued by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) based on the type of registration. And now the TRA IDRAS system provides a digital vehicle card where the customer can print the card and the vehicle owner and after payment is completed it is the responsibility of the seller to transfer the ownership from him to the Buyer

It is important: Do not hand over this card to the buyer until all payments are complete.

2. Sale Agreement

This is a written contract between you and the buyer indicating:

  • Name of seller and buyer
  • Vehicle details (type, registration number, chassis number, color)
  • Sale price
  • Date of sale
  • Signatures of both parties
  • Two witnesses (can be one on the seller's side and one on the buyer's side)

This agreement can be drafted by a lawyer or written in a formal manner but should include all the important details.

3. National Identity Card (NIDA) or Driver's License

To verify your identity as a seller, you are required to submit a copy of a valid ID — either a NIDA, driver's license or passport — along with a copy of your passport photo. The buyer must also provide their identification. This helps prevent fraud or scams.

4. Copy of Car Insurance

Although not required, it is a good idea to show a copy of the insurance that was in place when the car was sold. If the insurance is still in effect, you can instruct the buyer to go to the insurance company to transfer the title. This is important in case of accidents or emergencies that may occur during the transfer period.

5. Payment Receipt (Optional but necessary)

Whether the buyer pays in a lump sum or in installments, it is wise to provide a receipt for each payment. This protects your interests and keeps a clear record.

Conclusion

Selling a car is not just a verbal transaction — it is a legal process that requires proper documentation. If you are organized with all the necessary documents such as the car license, bill of sale, ID, and payment receipts, you will avoid disputes and protect your rights. Also make sure the buyer knows his responsibilities and the steps for transferring ownership, although currently the procedure for transferring ownership must be carried out by the seller of the car. Selling a car in accordance with legal procedures is the best way to conclude the transaction safely and peacefully.
